TASTERS FROM OTHER STORIES

Excerpt from ‘The Lost and Buried Weekend’

…‘Do you remember your mother being taken to the hospital emergency department Dara?’

‘What? No. You’re joking?’

‘Someone dared her to smoke out of her backside. Big mistake, with someone who’s had more drink than they can handle. Although to be fair, it was funny to begin with, and I’d say she won the game hands down. Or should that be bottoms up?’ She sniggered. ‘Shoving that vape up her bum and then crawling around with a cloud of menthol trailing her behind. Hilarious. Trouble is, she forgot it was in there, slumped down in the chair. It was nowhere to be seen.’…’

Excerpt from ‘The Band of Merry Men’

‘…They’d started filming in November and then broke up for Christmas. That had been a big mistake, as most of the costumes were much too tight now and Maid Marion looked as though she was 5 months gone, with her bodice strained to bursting across her bulbous bust. Robin’s Noble, heroic demeanour had been replaced with a lusty leer, constantly directed towards her cleavage. Little John’s look of friendship and admiration for Robin, was little better than a snarl of animosity. They had to be careful of shooting below belt for either of the not so merry men, as those tights were just a little too tight at times…

Excerpt from ‘Jimmy’s Odd Job’

…‘Why is Zol here though?’  I asked.

‘Well, why don’t you ask him yourself?’ She answered. Zol turned to fix me with his green- eyed stare. ‘Meow’ he said, which I instinctively interpreted as’ ‘Well?’

But when all is said and done, even though I was only a child, I could not bring myself to ask a cat such a silly question. It was just too fanciful an idea. I began to feel uncomfortable under the scrutiny of Zol’s piercing gaze, so I jumped off the bench and ran indoors, catching my shoe in the turn-up of my dungarees during my hasty exit and almost stumbling to the ground…’

Excerpt from ‘Area 52’

…’Even before Felix had reached the work station, Giles could sense there was something different about him. He was strolling along in a jaunty, casual fashion. For a human, this wouldn’t have been at all remarkable, but Felix, being an android, didn’t do casual strolling, and always walked in a very stiff and upright manner.

As he drew nearer, Giles noticed a change in his facial appearance too. It was subtle and at first, he struggled to put his finger on it, but after a moment it dawned on him – Felix looked more human. He had the same face, but it was more animated, more expressive. A wise, yet vibrant gaze had replaced the cold, mechanical stare.’…

Excerpt from ‘A Step Backward For mankind’

…’He decided she must be female, because of the jewellery she was wearing and the length of her hair. Her short hairy tree-trunk legs stomped two paces towards them. ‘Hi’ she said in a guttural, rough version of universal. Ned was transfixed by the startling emerald green eye in the middle of her forehead, framed by enormous thick dark lashes. Six teeth, two of them fanged, were revealed as she opened large fleshy lips. A clicking and whining noise emerged from the orifice as she threw her mop straggled head back. Ned knew instinctively that this had to be the Beasties’ equivalent of laughter. She obviously had a sense of humour, as she seemed to be doing a lot of it.’….

Excerpt from ‘It’s Murder Jim, but not as we Know it’

…’George hadn’t fared much better than me with his outfit. His top was tightly stretched over his paunch, with the trouser waistband being forced downward to sit underneath. Couldn’t find any realistic boots, so we’d plumped for a pair of bootie style slippers. His greying hair was hidden by his quiff-fronted, golden brown wig.’…
